At place. Saw Syberg. He is _____ Recorder. He said he would do all he could to get me a license. Wrote letter to [my cousin] James Hollister [at] Memphis, and to [my sister] Augusta.

At saloon.

Got license.

January 12, 1866

At place. At Dane Rice’s Circus.

January 14, 1866

Sunday. Rainy and disagreeable.

Wrote letter home. Rather pleasant but cool. Theater still running. Read Les Miserables by Victor Hugo. Business dull.

January 29, 1866

At place. Down town. Sent letter home. Warm & pleasant day. Reading a work on Civil Engineering. Took a long walk up town to see if I could get a house. Nothing new.

January 30, 1866

At place. Harry Van Houten at place. Business dull.

January 31, 1866

At place. Cleaning up. Went to theater. Saw Harry Van Houten. Drank with him. Alice Kingsbury played Camille — very good for her.
